A large number of studies have verified that therapeutic hypnosis can be highly effective in alleviating the symptoms of IBS, and, what’s more, in contrast to other treatments, hypnosis has no side effects. Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS as it’s often known, is a condition of the digestive system, with symptoms such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, constipation and feeling bloated. Before starting hypnosis, it’s very important to get checked out by a medical professional to verify that your symptoms are a result of IBS, and not some other condition with similar symptoms. IBS affects between ten and fifteen per cent of people at some point in their lives. Firstly, regular deep relaxation counteracts the stress response. When you’re under stress, due to certain pressures or worries in your life, the brain perceives that there is a threat to your safety, and it switches on your fight or flight response, just as it might do if a lion was hungrily eyeing you up in the wild. When this happens, your adrenal glands release adrenaline, which switches on certain responses in the body, such as sweating, quicker breathing, accelerated heart rate and so forth, gearing you up for the action you need to take to escape from danger. And it also switches off other responses that are not essential to survival in the short term, such as your sex drive, your immune system, and your digestion, because you really don’t need to be making love, or munching popcorn when you’re running for your life from a lion. This is fine in a short term situation, of course, but if you feel stressed for hours, days, weeks, or even months, your adrenal glands will be constantly side-lining your digestion. So what was an adaptive response – switching off non-essential functions for short term survival – becomes maladaptive as the immune system, sex drive and digestion stop functioning properly. When you relax deeply, you counteract all this. Your immune system works better and your stomach begins to get the oxygen and blood it needs in order to work better. Deep relaxation is the antidote to on-going stress. Hypnosis has been used for many years to help manage pain, accelerate healing, and to calm down inflammatory conditions of all kinds. For example, when people intensely visualize their immune system working better, by picturing healthy, strong white blood cells fighting off small, weak germs and bacteria, their white blood cell count measurably increases within a few minutes.   • Time(Line) For A Change - How And Why Hypnosis Works

    How hypnotherapy can help us create lasting positive changes in our lives is fascinating. Here's how and why it works. TIME(LINE) FOR A CHANGE > Los Angeles Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy Services - Time For A Change With Hypnotherapy Why is it so hard to change? We all know it: it is one thing to want to change, and another to actually act on it. Quit smoking, overcome stress, stop negative thinking... Who hasn't tried and used their willpower to change an old habit into a new, more beneficial one? We all have, multiple times. And sometimes it worked, at least for a while, until we eventually revert to the same exact behavior, over and over again. Most of our behavior occurs beneath our conscious awareness, and we react to situations prompted by subconscious patterns. The fact is that the conscious mind, which makes up our logic, reasoning, and willpower, is only 10% of our mind power. The subconscious mind makes up the other 90%. It is here, our learned behaviors drive our actions, decisions, and limitations. This is our "program", our "operating system", our "life script". The notion that the conscious mind is leading our life is an illusion. The conscious mind is the decision-making center in one sense, but all the motivations and self-limitations come from the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is the goal setter, but the subconscious mind is the goal getter. While our willpower is trying to make strides toward self-improvement, our subconscious mind's programming is set on “Repeat”: what we did yesterday becomes the template for tomorrow, just like a computer that infallibly executes the program fed into it. That's why it is so hard to change. Familiar VS. Beneficial Even if it's not beneficial to us any more, this programming inherited from our past makes up a familiar comfort zone for the subconscious mind, which will have a tendency to block any new behavior or belief pattern that is not associated to a past experience. This subconscious program that drives all of our behavioral system is intended to keep us on a steady track, safe from the unknown. Its position is, "better to deal with a negative familiar known than with a potentially positive unknown." Therapeutic hypnosis and positive reprogramming If we want to make any lasting change in our life, we need to provide new associations to our subconscious mind and make sure they don't get blocked in the process. This is exactly what therapeutic hypnosis is about: how to unlearn an undesired behavior and replace it with a positive, desired one. Therapeutic hypnosis gets our subconscious mind to be available to accept those new associations that are in line with what we know is in our best interest. Only then can the old programming begin to change. To implement a positive change, we have to internalize it. Not only reach for it. "Want" or "desire" something is not enough: for our subconscious mind, they both mean "I don't have it", "unfamiliar", or "unknown". And unless we really take action and turn this something into a "known" and make it part of our program, it will always keep it away from us. Therapeutic hypnosis is a wonderful tool to internalize new behaviors that are aligned with creating our highest quality of life. This is something the mind is well equipped to do, even though most of us have not been taught how to do it. How does it work? The subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between reality and fantasy: if we can make you feel and experience the effects of any positive change as if they were already happening to you, your subconscious mind will gradually think of this as a "known", and by so will start to automate it. How we do this is by using specific suggestions that help reprogram your subconscious patterns and implement a new automatic behavior in line with your conscious goals. What makes people change or improve isn't the content of any scientific explanation, but the experience they are actually having. An interesting experiment has validated this fact. An experimenter randomly divided a large group of men into three smaller groups. One group practiced shooting free-throws into a basketball hoop for several weeks, the second group visualized shooting free-throws but did not practice, the third group didn't practice or visualize. Not surprisingly, the last group made no improvement; in fact, they got worse. The group who practiced actual free-throws for several weeks improved the greatest, but only slightly better than the group who just visualized shooting free-throws. What we script or imagine becomes automated by the subconscious mind. How hypnotherapy can create positive associations in our subconscious mind is fascinating. By using self-hypnosis techniques, these athletes are conditioning their minds and their bodies to carry out the movements in reality just as they have performed them hundreds of times in their minds. An interesting experiment has validated this fact. An experimenter randomly divided a large group of men into three smaller groups. One group practiced shooting free-throws into a basketball hoop for several weeks, the second group visualized shooting free-throws but did not practice, the third group didn't practice or visualize. Not surprisingly, the last group made no improvement; in fact, they got worse. The group who practiced actual free-throws for several weeks improved the greatest, but only slightly better than the group who just visualized shooting free-throws. What we script or imagine becomes automated by the subconscious mind. Athletes will often use imagery and visualization just before their event to achieve their desired goal. Once they have pictured it in their mind they then simply proceed to do it. Utilizing this technique is especially beneficial when the sport requires a brief burst of energy. Another way that hypnosis can help competitive athletes is in dealing with pain and injuries. Learning to dissociate from the pain can help them better cope with it and perform in spite of it. Hypnosis can also help athletes recover more quickly from a sports injury. By accelerating the recovery time, the athlete can return to practice and competition more quickly, which can be key for athletes competing at the highest levels. But one glorious morning, you start your round with three consecutive birdies. You’re feeling pretty good. At the turn, there’s a 36 penciled next to your initials. You think ahead—not just to breaking 80, but possibly to shooting in the low 70s. You feel excited and probably a little nervous. Maybe you start to think about playing conservatively to "protect" your score. You start to think more about each shot. From this mindset, you will most likely start to play below your potential. You end up shooting a 44 on the back nine. You’re right back where you think you deserve to be. This familiar debacle is a result of you being out of your "comfort zone"—the subconscious mind’s idea of what we are capable of achieving, scoring, possessing, being and so on. This zone exists in all of us and governs every aspect of our lives whether we realize it or not. For instance, we all have a comfort zone for our income. We may say that we want to earn $100,000 a year, but if we subconsciously feel like we don’t deserve to have that much money or we worry about how it will affect our relationships with others, we will likely find a way to continue to earn the amount of money our comfort zone allows. The subconscious mind exists outside of our awareness, so these hidden beliefs can sabotage what we consciously say we want. In the sports-performance arena, the comfort zone acts like a thermostat to keep us in the range we believe we belong. One way the comfort zone shows up in golf is through one’s score. Just ask a group of golfers what they shoot, and you generally will hear comments like, “I shoot in the mid-80s” or “I'm usually in the low-70s,” even though some part of each of them usually believes they could go lower. A comfort zone is not a true reflection of your ability or potential. It’s nothing more than a belief system you have developed and proven to yourself over time. You can consciously reinforce it by saying things like, “See, I knew I couldn’t break par,” or you can look at where you’ve set your comfort zone—and expand it. Here’s an exercise that might help illuminate your own circumstances: Think about everything you are currently doing to improve your golf game. Draw a circle and inside it write down all of those things. You might include taking lessons, your sports hypnosis sessions, the amount you practice and play and so on. That circle represents your comfort zone. Next, draw another circle around the first one. The larger circle represents personal growth and change as well as your dreams or ambitions. This circle contains those things you wish you could do or achieve, but haven’t. In the space between the two circles write the word fear a few times. That's a fact: most of us pull back into our comfort zone as soon as we experience fear. Examples of such fears include feeling awkward or uncoordinated while making swing changes, or feeling anxiety about setting big goals and committing the time and energy necessary to achieve them. However, the most successful performers continually push themselves out of their comfort zone and face their fears in order to realize their potential. A perfect example of this is Annika Sorenstam. Early in her career, her discomfort with public speaking resulted in her intentionally finishing second or third to avoid having to face the crowd as the winner. Her coach, Pia Nilsson, asked Annika to practice a speech until she felt comfortable making it. Pia later said, “Annika has given herself permission to be great. It shocks some people, being so bold. But it’s crucial that you see yourself doing something exceptional so that when the time comes you don’t bail out. Because you feel you belong there, you stay in the zone.” Without a doubt, it is the mind that determines the outcome of our performance and behavior. Alpha Slow brainwave activity state of hypnosis (resting but awake). Also known as hypnoidal. Alpha is slower (deeper) than Beta, the awake state, and faster than Theta, a deep hypnotic state. Anchor A specific stimulus such as a word, image or touch that through the rule of association evokes a particular mental, emotional, and/or physiological state. Association A process by which a subject comes to respond in a desired manner to a previously neutral stimulus that has been repeatedly presented along with a stimulus that elicits the desired response. Behavior Modification The process of changing behavior by using techniques based on learning theory. The techniques include systematic desensitization, aversion therapy, and assertion training. Beliefs Knowns in the subconscious. Beta The brainwave activity state of the normal wake state. Higher than Alpha and Theta. Body Syndromes A body syndrome is a physical manifestation of an emotional trauma. When an emotion is held in or repressed instead of being processed and released, the emotion will express itself as a physical discomfort. Catalepsy A medium depth of hypnosis, between "hypnoidal" and "somnambulism". Chunking Moving between levels of specificity. To chunk up means to move to the bigger picture, to chunk down would be getting to greater levels of specificity. Circle Therapy Used only for the extinction of fears. It is the process of having the subject repeatedly confront his/her problem while in the hypnotic state. Since anxiety and relaxation are incompatible and can't be experienced together, the anxiety will gradually disappear. After having brought up and passed the fear many times, a reversal is given that the harder they try to bring up the old fear, the more difficult it becomes. In fact, the subject will feel a new emotion ("replacement"), amusement and a tendency to smile. Conditioned Response The learned response to an indifferent stimulus, which has been attached to it by repeatedly pairing the stimulus with the reinforcer. Conscious Mind The 12% of our mind of which we are most aware. The part responsible for logic, reasoning, decision-making, and will power. Contradictory Square An example is when a person with a high IQ is in a job that does not require or will not use the high IQ. The person is in conflict or incongruence between what they ARE capable of doing and what they BELIEVE they are capable of doing. Critical Mind An area of mind that is part conscious and part subconscious. Any time a suggestion is given to a subject that is detrimental to his well-being or in total opposition to his way of thinking, it will affect critical area of mind, and he will critically reject it by abreacting. Dehypnotization The process of removing a person from a hypersuggestible state. Defense Mechanisms All defense mechanisms stem from the basic instinct of survival. They operate on an unconscious level and they serve to deny or distort reality, thoughts, and action. Some Defense Mechanisms are: Repression, Denial, Rationalization, Projection, Displacement, Turning against self, Reaction Formation, Overcompensation, Intellectualization, Withdrawal, Regression, Sublimation, and Disassociation. Delta Slowest brainwave activity pattern of sleep, and the deepest, somnambulistic state of hypnosis. Also see Alpha, Beta and Theta. Depth Hypnoidal A light stage of hypnosis, usually associated with emotional suggestibility; also used to refer to the state of consciousness which is passed through in the transition from sleep to waking, and vice versa. It is characterized by rapid eye movement (REM), with an up/down motion of the eyes. Cataleptic A medium depth of hypnosis. Characterized by a side to side movement of the eyes. Somnambulism The deepest state of hypnosis, where the client responds with amnesia, anesthesia, negative and positive hallucinations, and complete control of the senses. This type of person usually has 50% emotional suggestibility and 50% physical suggestibility. It is characterized by the eyes rolling up underneath the eyelids. Direct Suggestion Hypnotic suggestions in the form of a command, or instruction. Contrast to Inferential Suggestion. Ego Sensation Change of feeling in the physical body or part of the body. Environmental Hypnosis A state of hypersuggestibility, triggered when an individual is in the presence of an overabundance of message units coming from their environment. This causes the person to try to escape the intense input. A kind of "walking hypnosis." Extraverbal Communication Communication by physical gestures or movements that infer a suggestion to an individual, according to their interpretation. Body language is an example. Fear of Falling and Loud Noises Babies are born with only two fears, that of loud noises and of falling. All other fears are learned and can be unlearned. Fight or Flight Reaction A primitive and involuntary reaction that is triggered during danger or anxiety, in order to protect oneself or to escape from danger. Homeostasis A state of equilibrium. What the body returns to when the parasympathetic nervous system is activated to respond to the fight/flight mechanism of the sympathetic nervous system. Hypersuggestibility A state of waking hypnosis and exaggerated suggestibility to influencing factors in the environment, especially to negatives; possibly the greatest cause of all emotional and physical problems. Hypnodrama The process of acting out a role in the hypnotic state, which can be used for increasing talents or reducing the effects of earlier traumas in the client’s life. Hypnoidal A light stage of hypnosis, usually associated with Emotional suggestibility; also used to refer to the state of consciousness, which is passed through in the transition from sleep to waking, and vice versa. Hypnosis An altered state of consciousness which results in an increased receptiveness and response to suggestions. While associated with relaxation, hypnosis is actually an escape from an overload of message units, resulting in relaxation. Hypnosis can be triggered naturally from environmental stimuli as well as purposefully from an operator, often referred to as a hypnotist. Hypnotherapist A therapist who utilizes hypnosis as a primary tool for assisting clients to achieve their goals. A Hypnotherapist often differs from others therapists by focusing on the role of subconscious behaviors. Official definition of Hypnotherapist - In 1973, Dr. John Kappas, PhD and Founder of the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, wrote and defined the profession of a Hypnotherapist in the Federal Dictionary of Occupational Titles: "Induces hypnotic state in client to increase motivation or alter behavior patterns. Consults with client to determine nature of problem. Prepares client to enter hypnotic state by explaining how hypnosis works and what client will experience. Tests subject to determine degree of physical and emotional suggestibility. Induces hypnotic state in client, using individualized methods and techniques of hypnosis based on interpretation of test results and analysis of client's issue. May train client in self-hypnosis conditioning." Hypnotist A person skilled in the technique of inducing the hypnotic state in others. Hypnotists are often associated with the use of hypnosis for entertainment (stage hypnosis). Ideomotor Response A response emanating from an individual's subconscious mind via the central nervous system. Such a response is a way of avoiding judgments of the conscious mind. Examples: handwriting, index finger raise while in hypnosis. Imagery/Hypnodrama Imagery is a feeling and experiential state. Unlike visualization, which is only on the idea of "seeing" something in the mind's eye, imagery uses all five of the senses. Hypnodrama allows a subject to act out subconscious conflicts in a sage environment in an attempt to vent and resolve them. Induction The technique of hypnotizing a person. The patter used can be either maternal or paternal; either one sends message units to the brain, preparing the subject to enter the hypnotic state. Inferred Suggestion A suggestion given that contains a message other than the immediately obvious one. Usually, the underlying meaning is not immediately understood consciously by the subject, but he will have a delayed reaction to it. It is especially effective with Emotionally suggestible subjects. Knowns (Pain/Pleasure Principle) Knowns represent pleasure, in that they are things we have associated or identified before. A Known may be either positive or negative but is accepted by the Subconscious because it has been experienced before. Conversely, Unknowns represent pain, or physical or psychological threats that have not been associated or identified before. Laws of Suggestibility Reverse Action The most common law, it's sometimes referred to as Reverse Psychology. A person will respond to the stronger part of a suggestion if the alternative presented is considerably weaker. Repetition It is represented by the fact that the more we do something, the better we become at it. By repeating suggestions in hypnosis, the stronger the suggestive idea becomes. Dominance The use of authority or that of being an authority figure to "command" the client to accept a suggestion. Capitalizing on one's position as "therapist" or by using an authoritative tone are two approaches to apply the Law of Dominance. Delayed Action When a suggestion is inferred, the individual will react to it whenever a jogging condition or situation that has been used in the original suggestive idea presents itself. Association Whenever we repeatedly respond to a particular stimulus in the presence of another, we will soon begin to associate one with the other. Whenever either stimulus is present, the other is recalled. The post suggestion to re-hypnosis works under this law. Life Script Formed from the positive and negative associations we've made throughout our life and stored in our subconscious mind. This is reflected in a person's present life situation. Literal/Inferred Suggestions Literal Suggestions A direct suggestion with no underlying meaning; used primarily with Physically suggestible subjects. Inferred Suggestions A suggestion given that contains a message other than the immediately obvious one. Usually the underlying meaning is not immediately understood by the client consciously, but he/she will have a delayed reaction to it. It is especially effective with emotionally suggestible clients. Magic Five Minutes The last five minutes before sleep, when a person's mind is in a natural light state of hypnosis. Maternalism A soft, gentle, lulling approach to hypnosis. A progressive relaxation uses the maternal approach. Mental Bank A tool used to reinforce many types of therapies and speed the progress in such areas as; procrastination, motivation, goal attainment, prosperity, smoking, etc. It is a powerful means of affecting the subconscious mind using the synergistic approach of belief, daily reinforcement, scripting, time of day, and dreams. Message Units All of the input sent to the brain by the environment, the physical body, and the conscious and subconscious minds. When too many message units are received (overloading), a state of anxiety results. Misdirection Appearing to be guiding someone into one area with the intention of directing them into another. It can be used effectively as a deepening technique in hypnosis. Modalities A hypnotic modality is anything that attempts to control or modify the human behavior through the influence or creation of belief systems. Neuro Pathways Every time we think a thought, make a movement, experience something, this is transformed into electro-chemical energy which is then stored in the brain. We create pathways that allow the energy to travel in a similar fashion each time it is triggered. The more it is triggered, the easier it is for the energy to go that route. This is how habits and behavior, both good and bad, are created. Parataxic Distortion This occurs when we respond to a person or situation in a distorted way. We are not responding to the situation or person, but rather to what they subconsciously trigger in us. Paris Window Used to widen the perspective of the client, so that he or she can see their problem from more than their own viewpoint. The window is a four-paned one, where three panes contain a question for the client. The questions are, 1). How do you feel about the problem? 2). How do you think others feel about your problem? 3). How do you feel about how others feel about your problem? 4). The fourth pane contains the answer to the client's particular problem based on their newfound perspective. Paternalism The authoritarian approach to inductions and therapy, using a rapid patter with commanding, or even demanding, words. Patter A rhythmic series of words in a semi-monotone or monotone, spoken either slowly or rapidly, causing stimulation of different senses and leading to the hypnotic state. Pre-Induction Speech An introduction to hypnosis to prepare the client for the induction. It should include an explanation of hypnosis and an idea of what he/she can expect to experience in the state. It addresses any fears and misconceptions the client may have, all the while building up message units. Primitive Mind A human being's primitive brain, with which a person will react whenever threatened beyond the point where he/she can reason. This primitive brain produces the fight or flight response, the unthinking impulses of self defense, or any other rapid reactions without reason. Rapport The operator/client relationship, in which the client has faith and confidence in the operator, and the operator has concern for the client. Reactional Hypnosis Repeatedly awakening the subject and re-hypnotizing him with a post-suggestion to re-hypnosis. An effective method of achieving depth in hypnosis. Secondary Gain A reason, primarily subconscious, why a person continues to perform a certain behavior. Self-Hypnosis - Hetero-Hypnosis Self-Hypnosis A hypnotic state that is self-created. Hetero-Hypnosis A hypnotic state that is created by another person, including the listening to of tapes or CDs. Shock Induction A very rapid conversion into hypnosis. Shock inductions are primarily used only in emergencies or possibly to "jar" a client when in therapy. Somnambulism A situation where a person responds equally well to all suggestions, both direct and indirect, affecting both the body and emotions. This person would have a 50/50 Suggestibility (50% Physical Suggestible and 50% Emotional Suggestible). Stages of Loss There are five stages a person must go through to completely deal with a loss. Not every individual will display all the symptoms in the same manner. The stages are 1). Denial, 2). Anger, 3). Bargaining, 4). Grief, 5). Resolution/Acceptance. Stop Mechanism A technique used in hypnosis to call attention to a behavior or thought a client may do or have in the future. When this thought or behavior arises they will hear in their mind "NO!" The Hypnotherapist reinforces this suggestion by stating the thought or behavior the client may have, snapping their fingers and saying "NO!" to the client. This is reinforced several times with the client repeating it to themselves silently but strongly. An example would be if the client thought about lighting up a cigarette when they were trying to or had already quit. Subconscious The 88% of our mind that is mostly below the level of our awareness. The part of our mind responsible for reflexive action, ideomotor responses, and contains the positive and negative associations we've made throughout our life. Suggestibility (Emotional/Physical/Intellectual) Suggestibility is the way a person learns and processes information. Emotional Suggestibility A suggestible behavior characterized by a high degree of responsiveness to inferred suggestions affecting emotions and restriction of physical body responses; usually associated with hypnoidal depth. Thus, the Emotional person learns more by inference than by direct, literal suggestions. Physical Suggestibility A suggestible behavior characterized by a high degree of responsiveness to literal suggestions affecting the body, and restriction of emotional responses; usually associated with cataleptic stages or deeper. Intellectual Suggestibility The type of hypnotic suggestibility in which a subject fears being controlled by the operator and is constantly trying to analyze, reject, or rationalize everything the operator says. With this type of subject the operator must give logical explanations for every suggestion and must allow the subject to feel that he is doing the hypnotizing himself. Sympathetic - Parasympathetic The two divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System. Sympathetic When activated causes physiological changes to occur, preparing the body for fight/flight. Parasympathetic A self-regulating, stabilizing system that brings a person back to a state of balance, or homeostasis. Systematic Desensitization The process of inducing a relaxed state in the client and then having him/her visualize or imagine an event that was traumatic to him or her in the past. The relaxation then becomes the dominant force, and as the client begins to relate to being relaxed and calm while relating to the trauma area, he/she allows for removal or desensitization of the trauma. Theory of Mind The mind is divided into four areas; all of which must be affected to enter the state of hypnosis. The Primitive Area Part of the subconscious and established from birth. It contains the fight/flight response and the fears of falling and loud noises. The Modern Memory Area Also a part of the subconscious and contains all of a person's memories (Knowns). The Conscious Area Formed around the age of 8 or 9, and is the logical, reasoning, decision making part of the mind. The Critical Area Also formed around the age of 8 or 9, filters message units and accepts or rejects them from entering into the Modern Memory. If the Critical Area is overwhelmed, it breaks down, activating fight/flight, causing a hypersuggestible state, that is, hypnosis. Venting Dreams The third stage of dreaming (after Wishful Thinking and Precognitive Stages), characterized by the mind's attempt to vent, or release, the overload of message units accumulated during the day. Putting off this medical exam, not paying that bill, not returning an important phone call... Until it becomes embarrassing, then costly, and then damaging to our life. Beating procrastination can literally lead to a whole new life – all it takes is a desire to change, a decision to act, and a little help from our subconscious mind. Definition Procrastination is the practice of carrying out less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a later time, sometimes to the "last minute" before a deadline. Pain and Pleasure To truly understand why we all procrastinate, we need to revisit our old friend Sigmund Freud. Freud was the first to recognize that we all operate under the dictates of the "Pain/Pleasure" principle. In other words, we seek pleasure (or pleasurable experiences) and we avoid pain (or discomfort, both physical and psychological). And since the tedious and unpleasant tasks listed above offer no pleasure and, in some cases, at least a little discomfort, we procrastinate. We are simply avoiding some perceived pain or fear, and unfortunately, the very act of avoiding itself eventually increases our discomfort. And the longer we avoid the task at hand, the stronger the discomfort becomes. We all have our reasons All of us experience the pain of procrastinating. It is painful because procrastinating prevents us from doing or becoming better; from living a richer, fuller life; from attaining goals we know would make us happier and more fulfilled. How do we do this to ourselves? For some procrastinators, non-doing represents not having to deal with success or failure and new expectations either would bring. The subconscious thinking might be: "If I wait until the last minute I might fail, but I won't have to deal with any new expectations of me that would accompany my success." Or, "If I don't do anything, I cannot fail; nothing will happen to me, I'm safe." Safe maybe, but in a very deep rut. Some people procrastinate for extra validation, waiting until the last minute and then pulling it off brings that extra validation; "I must be pretty good; after all, look what I just did." And if they don't pull "it" off, once again there is a handy excuse—not enough time—that places the cause and responsibility for the lack of results away from the individual. The "occasional procrastinator" can generally overcome the inertia of resistance to change; their bouts of procrastination may be nothing more than a minor nuisance, a mosquito in the tent of life that they can track down and swat away. For the chronic procrastinator though, the behavior creates an endless cycle of suffering, and the disappointment and guilt of having let themselves and sometimes their loved ones down... again. The cycle of chronic procrastination can lead to a spiraling crash of self esteem and a feeling of abject failure. Thankfully, it is also a cycle that can be broken, though most people need assistance. Therapeutic Hypnosis is a wonderfully powerful tool for providing that assistance.
