Do you dread getting on a plane? Does every noise and odd movement when you're in the air cause you to panic? Perhaps you had a stressful flying experience in the past. Or maybe your imagination has gone into overdrive and you have become frightened. No matter what the reason is, you might be experiencing symptoms such as:

  • A rise in anxiety levels as the travel date approaches

  • Constant, fearful thoughts about flying

  • Sweaty palms during routine turbulence

  • The inability to relax throughout the journey.

And the more negative thoughts you have about flying, the more your mind associates it with fear. Even the thought of booking a flight can prompt anxiety levels to rise. And when you're on board, you feel constantly on edge.

Fear is a subconscious response

Having a fear of flying can often interfere with holidays or business travel and lead to an individual avoiding a career involving travel or a family holiday abroad. There are many aspects of flying that can create anxiety, such as fearing the plane will crash, claustrophobia, being out of control, fear of having a panic attack and even fear of terrorism. Even being at the airport or boarding a plane may create anxiety for some people. Fear of flying can therefore range from mild anxiety before flying, to a state of terror which can prevent an individual from getting on the plane or even leaving it once they have boarded.

Most people who do not suffer from a fear of flying often feel that quoting safety statistics and probabilities should put the sufferers mind at ease. However this usually does little to ease the discomfort of the sufferer, who may then regard their fear as a weakness due to the statistical evidence their conscious mind knows. Yet fear of flying can affect anyone, regardless of age, status, gender and intelligence, and is not a sign of weakness.

Those who have experienced how it feels to be gripped by fear, way beyond what they consider rationally to be reasonable, know that there is an subconscious response causing them to feel that way.

But the good news is you're not alone. There are many people who suffer from a fear of flying. And the even better news is that there are also many people who have managed to overcome this fear and can now relax as they travel to their destination and in some cases even make flying a pleasurable activity!

Hypnotherapy can change your approach to flying, so that you can:

  • Be no longer gripped by fear when on a plane

  • Be no longer anxious in the run up to a trip

  • Stop thinking of the inside of a plane as a threatening place
